Djindjic on Washington mission
BELGRADE, Saturday – Serbia’s prime minister said today he would fly to Washington next week to persuade the United States to lift its freeze on aid to Yugoslavia.

Zoran Djindjic said that he and Yugoslav Foreign Minister Goran Svilanovic would attempt to resolve all misunderstandings about cooperation with the Hague Tribunal in meetings with Secretary of State Colin Powell and other US officials.

Washington has frozen about forty million dollars in economic assistance and withheld support for Yugoslavia in international financial institutions until Powell certifies to Congress that a number of “democratic tests” have been passed.

The main hurdle is the transfer of war crimes suspects to the Hague Tribunal.

Despite the issue of arrest warrants, none of the list of 23 suspects demanded by The Hague has been arrested, and only six have surrendered or indicated they will do so. (Reuters)
