Djindjic to test mood on Capitol Hill
BELGRADE, Friday – Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic travels
to Washington tomorrow to gauge US opinion on resuming aid to
Yugoslavia, Beta news agency reports.
Djindjic will be accompanied by Yugoslav foreign minister Goran
Svilanovic. The two are scheduled to meet US Secretary of State
Colin Powell, the man with the key to unlocking future aid to
Belgrade.
Congress in Washington froze all financial aid to Yugoslavia
after the authorities failed to meet demands for cooperation
with the UN war crimes tribunal in the Hague.
Five indictees have since handed themselves over and Belgrade
has begun extradition proceedings against a further seventeen.
Djindjic and Svilanovic are also expected to discuss Yugoslav
relations with the Paris and London creditors’ clubs. (Beta)
