Huge cigarette haul at Yugoslav Bulgarian border
DIMITROVGRAD, Sunday – Customs officers last night seized 18.2 ton of cigarettes being smuggled across the Yugoslav-Bulgarian border.
The head of the customs office at the “Gradina” crossing, Vladimir Stojanovic, said the discovery was made when they weighed a lorry which according to the documentation was carrying croissants. “In weighing it we ascertained that the goods were much heavier than stated,” he told Beta news agency.
The cigarettes were marked “Ronhill” and “Walter Wolf”
Cigarette smuggling has long been big business in the Balkans. Just last week, Serbia’s finance minister attended a regional conference in Pristina aimed at tackling the problem. (Beta)
