Finance ministers agree on harmonization of regional tax systems
Pristina, May 9, 2002 - Finance minister from the region agreed today in Pristina to harmonies tax systems and introduce mandatory use of excise marks on cigarettes in order to block smuggling, in was announced in a joint declaration following the meeting.
The signatories to the agreement - representatives of Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Albania, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia and Macedonia - agreed to cooperate on tighter tax and customs control, and to develop a mechanism for exchange of information on import, export and transport of cigarettes in the region. The initiative aims to halt smuggling, from which Kosovo alone loses €30 million annually.
