Frey predicts Yugoslav membership of CoE this year
B92

STRASBOURG, Thursday – Council of Europe political affairs envoy Claude Frey predicted today that Yugoslavia would be admitted into the Council this year.

Frey, speaking in Strasbourg, said that the situation in Yugoslavia had changed drastically since September last year.

Her referred particularly to the signing of the agreement on federal redefinition and ongoing reform processes, emphasizing that it was important for the CoE to give Belgrade a clear political indication of its admission in the shortest possible time.

The Foreign Affairs Commission is to examine the Political Committee’s report in Luxembourg on May 7 and then consider Yugoslavia’s application in Lucerne on May 28.

Another senior Council diplomat, Helmut Lippelt, was less optimistic, saying that the Council would wait until the promises given to Hague Tribunal prosecutor Carla del Ponte were met.
